Now that I have had some time to relax. I would like to offer my thoughts on the 2017 CrossFit Games season.
As a coach, athlete, and gym owner I have been privledged enough to have representation at 9 CrossFit Regionals, 4 CrossFit Games, and 1 World Police and Fire Games. In this time I have watched CrossFit grow from its infancy to the massive sport it is today. The CrossFit Games level is no longer for the weekend warrior or fitness enthusiast looking for a hobby. It’s now a competitive sport that requires training to be a career. But what if you can’t dedicate all your time to training? This is what I love most about the success of Precision and the athletes I coached in 2017. From Regional’s to the World Police and Fire Games, I coached and helped with a total of 22 Regional athletes, 4 Games athletes, and 4 WPG athletes. Of these athletes every one of them had full time jobs or were full time students. I coached a gold medalist police officer, and a silver medalist fire fighter. My athletes came from all walks of life yet brought something more to the table besides ability. They brought perspective. Competing at a high level was not a necessity… it was luxury. It was for fun but it had no bearing on their lives as a whole. This was something as a coach I was most proud of. The 7 top 10 finishes and 2 medals were just icing on the cake for people already successful at life.
In reflection it’s crazy to think how successful Precision has become in the current CrossFit format doing things the way we do them. We place value on family, health, and career before competition. This has been a recipe for success but one I feel can be hard to duplicate. In essence the only ones working hard at making this sport a career our Jose and I. I can’t speak for Jose when I say this. However, I can definitely say that this season was exhausting, mentally challenging, and invigorating. There were extreme highs and depressing lows. All in all it was our most successful season yet and by far… the longest. Six months went by, this is the length of a professional sports season. It definitely took its toll on me mentally. I look forward to the next 6 months to recuperate before hitting it hard again in 2018. Wall of Blue thank you for all your support. To Jose Cobian thank you for being right there with me. I love the coach and man you are and I look forward to each year with you.
