SEANANDBRADEN

Awsome “Beachside Beatdown” re-cap written by Braden Daniels. Check it out!

This past weekend was my first ever Crossfit Competition.  For those of you that don’t know about 2 years ago, I weighed in at about 267 lbs.  The heaviest I have ever been.  I heard about this thing called Crossfit and decided I needed something to kick start the weight loss.   After about 8 months I had lost about 45 lbs and I have been doing it ever since (minus a few months of injuries).  Now…, I had never planned on doing anything competitive, I was content with doing it as an outlet as well as a high intensity workout.  However, my gym Precision Crossfit teamed with Beachside Crossfit to do a competition for charity.  On Monday, the owner of my gym, Mike said that one of the guys that signed up for the competition hurt himself and wanted to see if I would fill in.  So I said what any married man with two kids that was being asked to give up an entire Saturday would say.  “Let me ask my wife.”  To my disappointment, Kayce said yes and I grudgingly volunteered my services for the better good of the team.  Now, I had 3 goals for the weekend:

1. Not come in dead last

2. Finish all of the workouts (WODs) under the time limits

3. Not get injured

The day consisted of 3 WODs to be completed by a team of 2.  I felt sorry for Sean who had inherited me as a partner.   The poor guy was probably expecting to do well, then he got stuck with the bald fat guy.

WOD 1  – Thruster 105lb,  then Pull ups in sets counting up 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30 4 minutes each. Sean kicked it off and got us up to 12, I took over after 4 minutes and rocked out 15 thrushers and 15 pull-ups unbroken.  Hmmm, didn’t know I could do that.  We went back and forth for 16 minutes and got into our set of 24.   Good enough for 4th to last.  At least it was not last… 1/3 of the way to goal number 1.

WOD 2 – 500 m Run, then- 2 rounds for time- Cannot start until both athletes are in from run

• 10 muscle ups

• 20 box jumps 24/20″

• 30 deadlifts 225

• 40 Toes 2 Bar

• 50 double unders

Now Sean is a little smaller than me, so we made a deal, he was going to handle anything that involved lifting your own body weight and I was going to handle anything that involved lifting something else.    We kicked it off and Sean set a personal record hitting 10 muscle ups in one round.   I hit the box jumps, then rolled into the deadlifts, hitting 21 unbroken before I had to take a break.  Sean kicked into the toes to bar, I tried to help, but really, lifting my fat butt above my head is not a strong suit.  The surprise of the day was the double unders.  I usually can’t do more than 5 or 6 at a time, who would have expected me to bang out 26 in a row to finish the WOD right under the 20 minute time limit.  It really was a photo finish.  We finished 20th, moving up the board.   1/3 of the way to goal 1 and ½ way to goal 2.

WOD 3 – Alternating between rowing and 1 minute AMRAP. • 4000 meter row for time, each partner must row 500 meters • 1min amrapx4- 7 power snatch 95 then7 pushups, tuns Concurrent with row ( while partnerA is on rower partnerB is on AMRAP) Now this one was in my wheel house, I can row like a banshee, so we kicked it off strong and kept going.   I am not sure how we did on this WOD, but it was good enough to move us up to 18th overall.   Boom, goal 1 and 2 achieved.

Now for goal number 3, we are going to have to wait a little longer.   My body is racked with so much pain right now I can’t determine if anything is actually injured or not, but I had a hell of a time.  I am happy with the day, but it never feels right to see your name on the bottom half of the leader board.   I feel redemption in my future. Thanks Michael Tromello at Precision CrossFit and everyone at Nathan Doud-Beachside Crossfit for the great weekend.   Also, thanks to everyone else that cheered me on.
