Yesterday, the Smileys and Pedi-Gays participated in the CrossFit Poipu Ultimate Hawaiian Trail Run. For one of them, it was the Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Hawaiian Trail Run – but we’ll get to that later.

The run featured some of the biggest names in the Crossfit world: Rich, Froning, Ben Smith, Jason Kalipa, Sam Briggs, Emily Bridgers, Stacie Tovar –to name a few. Naturally, Greg Smiley ran in the heat with the big boys – Ben, Rich, Jason. And, naturally, Greg ran in at the end with Rich and Ben.

Lynn and J-Smiles also kicked butt in the 10K and 5K divisions, ending covered in mud and battle scars. And, yes, this year Julie carried the sandbag at the end. Those endurance WOD’s are paying off!

And then there was Lisa. The story is long, but let’s just say there was a mix up with the trail ribbons and she and two Aussie girls turned a 10K into a 30-plus K on some of the toughest terrain in the hills. Seven hours later, she came riding in on a dirt bike – a bit (OK, a lot) dehydrated but otherwise just fine. Big thanks to the Kauai Motorcycle Club for their rescue and the Gatorade. Amazing guys. She gave some people a stressful day, but as Stacie Tovar told her at the luau that night –“Doing CrossFit is what allowed you to be out there that long.” Thanks to everyone who stayed to help … especially Greg who ran the trail a few more times. That 10K wasn’t enough for him anyway.

The luau Saturday night after the run was a blast, culminating with a set of tunes by Dan Bailey and special awards for Lisa and the Australian girls – whistles.

This event is amazing, and I know next year our group of four will include many others. I’m also sure the trail will be better marked. Aloha!
